Favourite After School Snack Ideas
When I was young, my *favourite* thing to have after school was cereal in a cup. I’m not sure why we had it in a cup, but that’s what we did. And now, my kids LOVE a bit of granola in a cup after school, too. I buy a low-sugar whole food granola from our local bulk store, and I usually add in an extra tablespoon of sunflower seeds to pull back on the sweetness, and a bit of chopped fruit/frozen berries too. But it's kind of an expensive snack, so they don't have it very often!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Other after school snacks my kids are loving right now:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - Mango hedgehogs. Mango season is our favourite season! Slice a skin-on mango cheek through the flesh across the length and width and turn it inside out and you have a cute little mango hedgehog. Add a handful of nuts on the side and you have a well-balanced snack.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - Green smoothie. Healthy fats, and a serve of green vegetables? Yes, please! Just add 1/3 cup of frozen blueberries, 1 tablespoon of avocado, 1 tablespoon of mixed seeds (pepitas, sunflower & chia), ½ cup baby spinach & a ¼ teaspoon cinnamon – blend with 1 cup of milk⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - Avocado on plain rice cakes with carrot sticks. (Full disclosure; I also add butter under the avo!)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - 1 apple with slices of cheese. With all the focus on super foods, it’s easy to overlook the humble old apple! I usually add in a little something on the side fat/protein wise to extend out the “I’m hungry” whinge until dinner time. (Apple slices dipped into nut butter is a big favourite of mine!)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - Veggie sticks with beetroot hommous. As they say, eat the rainbow.
